So back in early september, my timing belt (or rather timing belt tensioner from the looks of it) took a crap :glare:

I swapped out the motor and trans and got my car back after about 3 1/2 months of not having it. Now I finally got a chance to tear apart my old longblock. Pics:

The block. Flash has an uncanny way of making it look really bad. In reality it's just black and greasy all over. Notice the marks on the pistons...those aren't just little surface marks...they're like carved into the pistons. I was surprised how brutal it was.

The head. Classic 12 valves bent.

My K03 after 92k of driving. Shaft is super tight, and as you can see the fins are perfect. That's after 62k of running stock boost and about 30k of running 20ish psi.

You can smooth out the valve marks and sell them for ~$100 to someone wanting 20mm pins. I just sold mine with the rods for $160shipped. The head and block are still worth something. Could make some decent money if you fix the head or just sell it as is

Block is fine and up for sale on Vortex. Head rebuild is too much work/money to make any profit...so I'm just selling it as it sits to anyone who wants to build a head. How would I smooth out the pistons? Have a machine shop lathe them or something? The marks are pretty bad.

All you need to do is take some sand paper and get rid of the harsh edges since they become hot spots. If you can make them nice enough, they will sell

LOL if I can't, rest assured they will be powdercoated and turned into a very stylish set of paperweights.

The pics in this post are all the reason in the world I need to justify the BS that I went through with my timing belt job last weekend...thank you Murder :D

AWD block + ATC head > AWP engine

Is there a difference between an AWD head and an ATC head or are they identical? I don't know of a difference...they're both VVT...both have SAI...

Im sure if you post that tranny on vortex someone will take it off your hands when they blow theirs

The ol' 02J is already gone! I sold it to a local VW guy...his GTI's first gear had been toast for a while...so he bought my 02J, clutch (with 35k) and axles (mint shape after 92k :) ) and now his GTI's drivetrain is way smoother.

Here's some better pics of the block:

Cylinder walls...on a 92k old block:

(all I did was wipe them with a rag)

And here's pics of the new drivetrain. AWP motor+6-speed 02M transmission from a 2004 Jetta GLI w/50k. Adapted the AWP block to the ATC electronics.

Please excuse the mess in the bay, it will be tended to eventually.

Slight custom routing of evap stuff etc (that'll be gone eventually anyway):

02M. As far as I (and nate) know, nobody's stuck a 6-speed 02M in a FWD TT yet.

Custom bent power steering line :D
http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m96/lmaoxfilip/TMI02m/IMG_1394.jpg

Ugly hardlines running across intake mani. Didn't have those before...
http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m96/lmaoxfilip/TMI02m/IMG_1397.jpg

02M shift linkage...also, notice it's a jetta shifter (larger). My shift throws are longer than a TTQ's, but frankly I drove one back to back with my car and really prefer my shifter. It's much smoother IMO. Could be because the links are brand new.
http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m96/lmaoxfilip/TMI02m/IMG_1398.jpg

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m96/lmaoxfilip/TMI02m/IMG_1399.jpg

More of the power steering line, which also directly obstructs the crosspipe. I may mod the line in order to run a skidplate...

The blocks and heads are identical.

Those walls look awfully smooth, wonder what the compression on that was.

That's why I don't understand this

Those install pics bring back fond memories of the twin-turbo engine swap in my 300ZX. Ouch on the first pics - valve salad for sure.

My block went to a good home tonight...I sold it to the guy who bought FrankieBonez's setup. The guy's doing a 2.0 build with a GT35R aiming for 450-500whp. Rather happy that someone's putting my block to such good use :)

Damn how could you selll that :( ? (I take it you don't have it anymore). My buddy has a factory 300ZXTT...I love that car, but he just blew the head gasket and can't afford to fix it. I'd so buy it from him if I had the money to.

It's a Cayman! ;)

Yeah I don't know why it wasn't faster with two engines in it!

Original @ 92k...I was about to change it actually. A friend of mine just got a GTI with 93k and I can hear the belt making noise lol. After I told him not to drive it he got paranoid as hell and is driving it down to a mechanic saturday.
