So I just saw a VW Beetle turbo pass and it had this knocking sound in the engine. It seems that every car that ive come across latley with a forced induction engine has this same noise (im talking about non-enthusiast daily drivers). What is the noise? and Is this because of poor matainance on the owners part?

Probably people who don't change their oil often...

But loud enough to be heard as it's driving by? I agree our lifters are pretty loud especially on a cold start but still.

When my engine was put back together, the lifters were all you could hear. it took about 1k+ miles of driving for them to quite down. Both the lifters and cam tensioner could make enough noise that a stocked exhaust car passing by you could hear them.

Wow...when I fired mine up, I shat a brick as I heard what sounded like all four lifters playing marbles at 700 RPM...then realized the engine I just fired up had been sitting for at least 3 months. Pretty quickly (few mins), as they got oil, the lifters shut up and returned back to typical ticky VW head noise levels.

Yep, the guy that put my engine back together wanted to replace a bunch of stuff and cost me another $2k, i was like nope. Now my engine is back to normal except a tiny bit louder overall

So this is something that happens over time?

It shouldnt unless the car is poorly maintaned. Of course the tensioner can slowly go as the years and miles add up but its nothing like a TB issue

Holy crap, that sounds diesel
Did you get anything in your head replaced? Mine was just clacky sounding for a minute or two when it first fired up...after that it was normal.

nope, mine just sat dormit for like 7months. Plus the extra noise and time could of been due to lack of oil in them before the head was pulled.

youtube blocked at work.. With the bug I saw earlier, you couldnt even hear the turbo spool. Is yours on that level?

unless the car was accelerating past you, has well above stock psi, and an intake, you probably wouldnt hear the turbo spooling.
But yes, mine was really bad

Then they are probably running to thin of oil and not changing it soon enough would be my guess like Filip said.
