View Full Version : Shift Knob Idea

I noticed that some TT have a threaded shift knob. Does anyone know the pitch and diameter? It would open up a world of shift knobs if it is common with any other manufacturer. My stock unit is getting pretty worn out and I am looking to change it out and add a leather shift boot at the same time. Anyone have some useful insight here?

Thanks again!

Any knob for a TT or MkIV Golf/Jetta will work, search for both, there are a lot...don't get a $20 shifter unless you want to notch the shift rod for securing the knob

My sparco can with a adapter peice that you bolt onto the stock shifter so it doesnt matter what type of thread or pitch it is

I had a thread on AF titled "shit knob idea" also. I'm using the the guts of my stock knob(the threaded part). I'm using a nice phenolic resin billiard ball. I'm gonna bore it out, then epoxy the threaded insert inside the ball. Then I'm gonna use the shift pattern plack from my stock, to mount on top of he ball. "Budget mod". Price=$10-$15:)

I like the idea of a simple resin ball, seems like other isht is over the top

The phenolic resin is the shit! It's super durable. It will never fade, never crack, it's only a little bigger than the stocker. And once I get the hole drilled and the shift pattern plack done, you will never know
It was an 8ball.

after you get the ball mounted, you could put it on a ladle (sp?) and do some cool designs on it.

or you could to the divots in it by drilling slightly if you were really skilled.

For those who wanted to know, stock knob pitch thread and diameter is 10mm x 1.5. Similar to S2000 and some Hondas. Just so you know.

I'm going to flatten out the top of the ball with a belt sander, and use the shift Pattern from my stock knob. And no dimples. I would get rid of them all if I could.

x2, I would love to see a TT w/o the vent and gauge needle dimples, it would look so much cleaner...

that's what he's using, an 8-ball, and shaving the 8 off and putting the shift pattern from the stock nob ontop.

it's a good idea man, post some pics of the progress.

I also need to know if it's course or fne thread right? I've decided to just tap and die the ball. If I take my time, I should be able to nail it. I'm using the drill press tomorrow.

I have no idea, I had to 'massage' the custom one I ordered to fit.

Ive since moved the boot down a little, and like the exposed shifter rod better. The flash doesnt do the black any justice. it looks much better in person than it does in the photos. I really like the feel, and it wasnt hard to do. Lol the hardest part was getting my old knob off.

Thanks. The rest of the big metal parts on the interior are soon to be powdercoated.

i was thinking about doing that! i wanted mine all in a black chrome finish, or titanium... then if i feel really different i kinda wanted to do the lower half of the panels (glovebox level down), in a different finish.

you're gonna have one of the nicest TT interiors.

I got the boot from GAITER BOOTS. they sell them on eBay. they actually make a nice product. they come from the U.K. the holes that they punched were a little off, but i made my own. They are a pretty reputable company. I like it. And for the price, you cant beat it($26 shipped). I sold my stock rubber one for $20 on vortex. =)

I think in order to run it with the exposed rod, you would need that gated shift plate that people have been talking about. the only issue with that, is that adding color to the shift rod would be tricky. And, the open shift gates would allow debris and foreign objects to fall into the shift bushings/grease and linkage (not a good idea IMO). And I realize(after taking those pics)that I need to trim my boot a little more.

hmm that's a good point... i have enough issues shifting as is with more crud stopping me. i kinda got an idea. lay like long thin black bristles along the underside of the gate plate, glue them on there well so there's a nice 1/16th inch to them. then just cut through the gated slots through the fibers an you should have a kinda of a barrier to shift the rod through. Does that make sense? rubber would probably slow you down if too thick, too thin and it'd flop down. i like the idea of black fibers going perpendicular to the slots, it'd take a lot to interfere with the movement. plus i bet you couldn't see through them.

look into this perhaps you will?

It's a good thought. but I think if you go that route, you need to create a small pouch or bag underneath the plate(with the shifter through it). Like a shift boot(only shorter), under the shift plate. It would catch any debris, and you wouldn't be able to see it. You could attach it to the underside of the shifter with a zip tie.

frostyflax17

so like a reverse shift boot? that could work easier haha.

i still kinda want to try that fiber idea when i get mine though, make it look a little cleaner compared to just having giant slots that things can fall into.

I think u could find a tight peice of rubber to fit, cut a hole for the rod ,and put under ring/boot/gated... to keep out debris

All other cars (that I have found) do not have any other protection. You can use your stock shift boot zip tied down to the shifter (well, I checked and it should fit). But I would not really worry about debris to be honest.
