View Full Version : Screaming, metallic turbo sound?

So my turbo recently started making this very bad noise. its only when i give it full throttle. It sounds like a screaming metallic detist drill like. (i know thats symptoms of turbo failure) But is there a reason why it only happens sometimes? if im gentle getting onto the throttle it sounds fine. when it does make the noise it seems like there is a slight drop in power. I dont have a boost gauge to check. Could this please be a boost leak, dv, wastagate probelm? or is my turbo going to die real soon?

That noise is the compressor or turbine hitting the housing, might not be enough force to push it against the housing unless you're really on the throttle.

The drill sound is usually the blades hitting the compressor housing. You should check all the options you have listed:
Pull of tip and check for play
check the wastegate arm and nut
pressure test the system if the other 2 are ok

I'd take it really easy. Might be the internals of the turbo going out. There's lil flapper type things they tend to go out do to bad oil

It might be a boost leak. Check under the hood for any signs of blackening from exhaust. And get it pressure tested. I bought my car a year and a half ago and had a boost leak till about a month or so ago. It turns out that two of the three bolts on the turbo mani had backed out and cross threaded themselves. It took me this long to figure out that i could just unbolt the outlet pipe from a c-clip. HAHAHAHA. I got some new bolts, replaced them, and shat my pants. My car was actually decently fast with that gt2x. lawls.

i agree with Filip and Cincy, the blades are hitting the compressor housing, sounds like u might need a new turbo soon :(

Is it worth rebuilding a ko4? Can you build it to make more power?

So if its the blades hitting the housing, im going to guess there is nothing i can do about it? besides replace turbo?

Not in a cost effective manner, no. I've looked into tweaking a K03...the wheels cost a lot not to mention the labor to rebuild the seals etc.

There isnt to many ko4's compared to ko3's, so it would be worth it if you plan on keeping it. blouchturbo.com can put a larger compressor wheel on it increasing the lb/min if you like, but it will cost you

It will need to be rebuilt and a new wheel added

hmm, ive been saving for a BT for a while now...

so on the Blouch website they say that the 22 lb/min K04 is good for 220 hp.
and the Ko4 with the 27 lb/min compressor upgrade is good fro 270 hp?
does that really mean that the custom ko4 is good for 50 hp more than my stock Ko4?

Thats for the ko4-001. The ko4-20 is like 25-27lb/min already and it increases it to just over 30lb/min. Ill have to let l88mvette answer that because he has talked to them.
But yes, 1lb/min is ~10hp

Its $700 for the rebuild with a 33mm compressor

So if i heard right a Ko4 w/ the 33mm upgrade will need new rods?
if this is the case i would rather just get a Gt turbo and not have to build the engine. is the GT28rs the biggest w/out doing rods? or could a 2871R work?

It would be wise to have rods on the upgraded ko4, just because its alot of low end power. The apr 225 kit comes with a 2871r and seems to do fine on the stock engine. If you plan on upping the psi, swap heads, or intake manifold, rods will be needed

sweet, i think i may consider doing the 2871R then, and keep it at a safe power level for now. then later on when i got some more money I could do that other fun stuff... I will make a new post when I start taking some action, for now im just going to drive carefully untill i can get everything i need put together. $700 is a great deal, i will get back to you.

No one has run it yet, but 300-320wtq would be a safe estamate

Cinc, any way that more HP could be squeezed out of that impeller/rod upgrade? Maybe adding an intake manifold or something. I like the TQ numbers, but I would like to hit the 300 mark with the hp.
