Many people do. Removing the airbox makes the engine louder along with the turbo and dv. You wont see any real performace gain however

I was going to get an HKS mushroom filter mainly for the sound. Not too sure it's a good thing to get though. Paging Doctor Cincy....

EDIT: Damn you're fast

The shrooms give a good sound and flow great, but they dont filter out as well. The k&n flows and filters great, but you need oil. The AEM dryflow is always a good choice since they claim it filters better and flow better than k&n when dirty, not to mention no oil to mess up the maf

I removed my air box and put a cone filter on and I noticed a gain... My stock filter was super dirty so that may have been a part of it but i noticed my hamster wheel spooled up quicker...

i have a buddy who has a AEM air intake, says its probly better then any other intake hes tried.

but really? do the mushroom filters not filter as much as the cone?
i wouldnt have guessed that. i thought it was just a style preference.

The shrooms are foam and used for their very high flow. They give up filtration for flow. There are now new 3 layer ones that filter better, but they are about x2 the cost of the AEM or K&N. Only time they are really needed is when space is tight.

^ like ITG :)

i like mine a lot though, doesn't need to be cleaned often and flows great.

I took off my BMC CDA (for sale ;)) and just use a K&N with the stock airbox, and I love the sound of the turboback w/o the constant turbo hiss. I forgot about the dryflow when I ordered, but it was only $30...

I have the HKS mushroom. Def much louder than stock. I also kept getting a CEL (lean) running stock box with a KN. But since the HKS no issues. I hear alot of talk about the Cheese box mod or what not. I havint seen info on it in this post yet.

That is what im running now. My bother wanted my shroom for his passat so i went back to the box. It has a handful of holes on the bottom and the fender side. Works well and sound does increase

Your pag intake pipe looks really good with the shroom taken all the way to the fender. Have seen some that have the filter just off the maf which just doesnt look right

my shroom is right off the maf on the pag inlet but only so the w/m pump can have space :)

Wouldn't a velocity stack/cone filter be better? A VS has to flow better than the flat shroom...

The shroom i was using had a stack built into it.

I cut my stack outta the oem box and just jammed it into my cone.

I use an open generic cone filter....cleared up a lot of space compared to stock box and sounds really good.

I cant think of anyplace. If there was, i bet it would cost more than just ordering one online and waiting a couple days.

The battery will be moved to the back to make room for the W/M pump, Thats why I decided to take the filiter all the way to the fender.

I am thinking about using an MISHIMOTO CARBON FIBER AIR INTAKE. Does anyone have any experience or opinions on this intake??

If you want to pay $350 for sound and looks, go for it. Thats the only reason to buy a new intake (for the 329712nd time)

Yea ive got the K&N and i love it. Of course going in i knew that i wasnt going to gain performance,(yet in the back of my head i was praying for it lol). Great sound too, ..im louder than most of the truckers on the interstate when i give it a little gas (hissing wise) haha

I just switched from a BMC CDA, and I really prefer the stock intake. I removed the rubber duct between the box and the fender, and you can hear the turbo just enough. I got so sick of the constant hiss and noise...my car sounds so more refined/menacing with mostly turboback sounds :)

that intake didnt cause you any problems?
when i ran mine i had a huge decrease in power
and my engine would stop boosting at 5k and go straight into vac.
i couldnt never find out the problem for the longest time... one day i swapped on the stock box and everyhting was perfect again
only thing i could think of is it gave the maf a bad reading..
pissed me off though... theres 300$+ down the drain lol

so hey, i remember talkin bout this a long time ago, but im just guessin that with a bad MAF reading, you dont fuel right which in turn makes your lose power correct? Cuz ive been having a code go on and off for a year now and its P1136. I did too notice a decrease in power when i go into 3rd gear--i wonder if that the same for anyone else
