anyone else in here watch formula one? just wondering how some of you might feel about the KERS system they are using in the '09 cars. i personally think its pretty cool. for those of you that dont know what it is, it stands for 'Kinetic Energy Recovery System' and it takes the energy produced by braking and stores it so you can use it as a power boost later on. i think it produces 80hp at the push of a button and i think it recharges after each use. anyone think theyll ever make a street version? as of now i think its extremely dangerous if there are any problems, so i think they would have to work out a lot of kinks to make it street safe.

I can't seem to find a detailed explanation of how exactly they implemented it...but man the new F1 cars look weird with the new wing dimensions lol.

personally im like 50/50 on it

i thin its kinda cool in the sense that it adds around 80 more hp and also that its damn heavy so it evens out

but personally if i was in f1 i think id run without it
just cause the added weight

but how about the new honda/usa team completely dominating

its nice to see mclaren and ferrari not at the front for once

i think this is gonna be one crazy season

Hadn't heard about this, the tech is cool, but in the end its like F1 nitrous. I'd prefer to see F1 allow more innovation and use smaller engines. F1 may be the cutting edge, but its so sterile, and I don't give a shit about the difference .003" makes. Give me WRC anyway, or the innovation and experimentation of the 1960s/1970s

I think the problem is if you gave them the tiniest bit of leeway for innovation they'd make monstrously fast cars (as if they aren't now) not to mention as soon as someone introduces something new and dominant it gets banned.

I mean look at what's going on now...Brawn (who kicked the shit out of everyone in case anyone missed it) have rear diffusers that other teams are bitching about. That bit of aerodynamics is enough of an innovation for other teams to start bitching and trying to get it banned...

And LOL at Ross Brawn:

anyone think theyll ever make a street version?

They do, its called a prius. Ok so yes its not exactly the same but... A similar system is used in a prius to instead of give you a 80hp speed boost provide power to batteries to run a motor to give you better gas milage, same principle.

Which is exactly the point of where they want this technology to go. Improved performance so it can improve street car tech.

As for brawn gp, they did show a strong performance, that guy knows what hes doing. I didnt think they have any US affiliation do they???

They did try small engines... In the 70s there were teams with 1.5T's "limited" to 4bar and putting out 1400hp in qualifying setup.

I was watching something about this on the speed channel.
they added the kers and also made the body design slimmer and changed the wing design. I think they were also talking about changing to slicks?

I think its bad ass personally. the boost in power is going to allow more aggressive racing :D

yeah i dont see why if they were giving such a big advantage w/ the rear diffuser, why didnt the other cars just run it? they said it was an optional diffuser so i think it was a worse decision on the teams that didnt run it even after the other teams had better lap times.

as far as the whole overregulation of the sport i personally like it. the cars are extremely fast, which leaves all of the racing to pit strategy and driver skill. which is where racing should be. i mean, its cool to have some type of unlimited class of racing, but it would get boring if the fastest car was out front and no one could catch it, at least with the cars all the same, a bad pit strategy or a driver error could change the outcome of the race.

they didnt run the diffuser because they thought
building off that light bar in the rear was illegal

but apperently it didnt say anything in the rules about it this year
so now they have all this extra downforce and all everyone can do is bitch lol

i really like how they let the teams really design there cars this year
its cool to see the different designs people went with
cant wait for sunday

that vid was great. It seems that its going to be more entertaining to watch since everything has seem to change for the better. The cars do look a tad goofy, but i see the reasons for the changes.
