View Full Version : Flat Black Paint Idea!

Ok so I have been playing around with the idea of painting my TT flat black. It is already a roadster and I was just wondering if anyone has had any experience in this area. From what I have researched I will probably go with a sealer, primer, flat black, and a flat clear. Any thoughts or opinions are welcome, as well as advice and info. Thanks guys. Here are a few cars for reference:
The Lexus, Lotus, and Mercedes have just a little too much sheen for me, but kinda gets the point across.

my thoughts are have someone that has done this type of painting do it.... you can not make one mistake ... its pry one of the more harder paints to lay down.

I already have black rims, but yes I do need to keep it black, but im looking for lightweight rims, probably have to go down to 17" and around 17lbs a piece hopefully.

Step 1: get bucket of water
Step 2: get pack of 1500 grit
Step 3: sand car
DONE!
Haha I'm kidding, satin is generally harder to do than gloss . Please, for the love of God, do not try and do it yourself.

The body work has to be 150% perfect. Black gloss paint shows imperfections horrible, flat black is 20x worse.
But as far as the idea of doing it! I'm all for it. I wanna do I myself. But scared of how carzy hard it is

I know a few people, who paint for a living, I am going to have them probably help me with it, and then if I do mess up the paint job, just take it in and have them do it, TT is going in the Garage so I dont need to drive it as a DD anymore thank god.

I would just sand it down myself and then take it in and have a pro do the final prep and spraying and not waste time + money trying to spray myself. You'll need a car size spraybooth + filters and everything to do it right yourself otherwise.
Painting is such a fickle process, powder is bad enough, liquid paint is even worse from my experience.

is there a flat black rustoleum? haha just roll it!
sport compact had their 240 and sti both rattle canned and they both always looked pretty damn good in the mag pictures! prob a huge diff in person but hey who knows
if i end up keeping my car for a really long time it's def going to end up flat black

only problem with painting a car w/ a rattle can is the inconsistency when painting. i bet the sport compact 240 and sti look like crap up close if they were painted w/ a rattle can.

I think you need to do a lot more research on this paint job. Make sure this is what u truly want to do. Iv read a few places where you CAN NOT buff blast black cars. So if u get a lil scratch your paint job is F'ed. But I'm not sure if they are talkin about the color or the flat clear??

Do not paint it. Get a vinyl wrap. That is what most of the high end guys do (the Ferrari and Porsche are both wraps BTW). It will last longer, be cheaper, and have the added benefit of being totally removable.

Most of those cars posted are wrapped. The prices vary on the the color of the wrap and the if you want a graphic in it. it is about 800 to do a car if I recall. It's about the same process as tinting your windows.

Wow thats crazy I have never even thought of that, and thats not a bad price for a whole wrap.

about how long do they last? and if you leave it on too long, will it melt or crack due to weather?
seems like a pretty cool idea.
i wonder how hard it would be to do all of the TT... so many curves and stuff.
Like others said, most of those cars you posted are vinyl wrapped. It lasts 9 years when taken care of. Your paint is left exactly the way it was when you put it on. From my link, you need to call and ask about special ordering a 60" roll. Probably would cost you $600+ for the roll and a few hundred more for some other required tools. I wouldn't recommend doing it yourself for the first time, as you have probably seen DIY tinted windows and how those turn out. lol

At least I dont have to wrap the roof!
Emailed a place in Oklahoma City that does car wraps, they told me they can do the TT for 9.99 a square foot. And that the TT is between 175 and 225 square feet. I estimated 200sq ft and it came out to about 2K for a whole car wrap.

I think I might find a local bizness to foot the bill. Maybe I can find a shop that wants to pay me to advertise for them. That would be cool as shit! They could atleast pay for the wrap and a monthly gas fund.

Another thing with having it painted is shops will tear your car completely apart. Bumpers, fenders off. Door handles , mirrors, door panels. Hood, SOME take the doors off! Seals!
Not only that. But they will need your car for a week to do this!

For me thats ok, the TT is paid off finaly so its staying in the Garage, and gona ride the bike to work most of the days, unless there is bad weather, then I will be driving the truck. I think I will probably save up the money and try the wrap see how it goes and if its staying inside I suppose it will last alot longer too.

Yeah. If the shop has no others cars and you have about 10 really well skilled guys. It could be done. BUT a lot of shops don't want nothing to do with "complete paint jobs". They loose money.

If you look at those that have been painted vs those wrapped, the paint looks better. The paint has a finer "grain" or texture to it.
The wrap wins though because of the ease of and quickness of the application. Plus it can be removed. I Think i'm def gonna do this in the future
I dont' know if this has been said, but some of those cars on the first page have been painted and some wrapped. Hard to tell the difference
