This weekend I did the timing belt job on my 90 sport quattro, replaced the waterpump and thermostat to try and fix my mild overheating issue. It appears that the main problem is neglect to the cooling system, the entire system is filled with rust which caused the thermostat to lock up. in order to keep this from happening in the future with the new thermostat, I need to get this rust flushed out.
Before I changed the belt and everything I used some prestone radiator flush to try and clean everything out but it did little to help when I drained the system. Has anyone cleaned out a dirty system before, what would you suggest I do?
I plan to remove the radiator again and clean it out with some CLR bathroom cleaner. but I'm not sure what to use to clean the rest of the system because I'm sure CLR bathroom cleaner is not safe to use inside the engine lol
your thoughts?
