Oh yeah dude! replace at least once a year. and if you get a chance to buy a few do so. that way you dont have to take a trip to the dealer all the time. some cars have more than 1

I actually ordered mine from AutoZone. Now that you mention it, I should have ordered a couple just to have them. I also picked up the "activated charcoal" version as my replacement, so we'll see how that goes. I didn't realize you were supposed to replace those quite so often..

Especially if you don't park in a garage. Parking in an are with more debris(like under a tree)will make shit build up like leaves and garbage. I had an old range rover that had 2. They were known to blow the blower motor because of clogged filters.

Dealer recommendation is every 15k, so changing it every year sounds about right. If you don't change it, the vents will usually smell like musty socks....

Im in dire need of changing mine. Its not a musty sock, but im sure its as bad of worse as the pic above

If you don't have a chance to replace it, you can hose it down real well and let it dry. Once it dries, spray it down with anti-microbial febreez. Just like reusing an AC filter in the house.

On the engine side of the firewall, right below the windshield(passenger side).

I've never changed mine. I think the dealer changed it one time back when i had scheduled maintenance, but I'm under my that plastic every now n then and it still looks good. Definitely doesn't stink...It's prob going on 3 yrs now :-D
Eh, maybe i'll change that too

Can they be picked up at a local store (pep, autozone, napa) ?

Cincy

I saw them at Meijer, so just about anywhere should have them.

I had to order mine from AutoZone, but like cincy said you should be able to do that just about anywhere. Not sure of the price difference between them and the dealer, but I can't see it being cheaper at the dealer.

i looked under the hood behind the engine on the passenger side and didn't see anything that resembled a pocket for an air filter, guess i'll be checking out the bentley when have more time.

i'm guessing you have to remove the charge pipe and some other stuff?

No ya crack head, it only takes 5 minutes to change out. You might have to lift a flap to see the filter, but thats about it. I can't remember exactly what you have to get out of the way to get at it, but on the A4 you just have to take the plastic pleanum cover off to get at it.

That's usually what they look like when you remove them at the dealer. Jiffy lubes and fter market shops don't look at that crap, so the 10K mile service interval suddenly become 60k miles! I've seen much worse... usually infected with mice. And then you have to clean all the smelly black jelly beans out of the air box. So yeah, it could have been worse.

I just put mine back in tonight. I took it out and hosed it down. Hit it with the febreeze, and let I dry over night.

ugg, i just changed mine. Schit cost $18 from pep boys and the quality of it was no where near the quality of what I took out. The pep boys one was thinner . Anyway, being that they are paper, are they really supposed to be washable?

I think next time i'm gonna cut up a filter from a central air conditioner filter. Those thing filter microns n schit. Pollen, dirt, bacteria, syphilis...those filter get it all. These car filters are booty

auditech79
06-17-2009, 11:12 PM
^^^ You could do that actually, get a bad ass filtrete filter from home depot for like $10 and cut it to fit. Those have much better filtration anyway.

These filters are suppsed to be activated charcoal. Getting them wet doesn't hurt anything. Charcoal keeps your cars AC from smelling like feet/ass.

"feet/ass"

I did get the activated charcoal filter, and my AC admittedly smells much less musty. Might be worth the $$ after all?

Anyway, being that they are paper, are they really supposed to be washable?

The filters are available in charcoal or standard paper. Neither are washable.

The paper eventually gets holes in it. Throw it out and replace it.

The charcoal versions help to eliminate chemical odors and is recommended for anyone who has bad allergies or hates noxious fumes. The charcoal bonds to the airborne chemicals and cannot be washed out. Once the all the carbon has bonded to chemicals, it's garbage. Throw it out and replace it.

The best product I've found to spray down a vent system and pollen filter is Fridgi-Fresh. Of course it's BG product, so it can be a bit hard to find and a bit pricey, but it's the best one I've used.
